Pogue Mahone at the Jericho Folk Club

In 1984 I was living in Oxford and was an avid reader of NME. I'd read a few things about an interesting sounding 'punk/folk' band called Pogue Mahone, and then saw something that said they had been booked to play at the Jericho Folk Club (at the Jericho Tavern). I can't remember if this was before or after their first album came out but either way they were not anywhere near as well known as they later became. Having read about them I was at least a little prepared but I got the impression from looking at other people at the club that this was not quite what they expected. At one point Shane Macgowan said in between ongs 'You dont know if we are doing good songs badly or bad songs even fucking worse!'. I thought they were quite wonderful, if a little scary !
