Famous Monday Blues

I and my wife were regulars at the Famous Monday Blues. At first based in the Brewery and Bakehouse (now the Red Lion), then briefly at Jongleurs in Hythe Bridge Street before moving to the Bullingdon. Philip Guy Davis, who ran it, managed an impressive list of guests over the years. Some well-known names - Wilko Johnson among them - but mainly onlky known to fans of the genre. The quality was always impressively high though. On one memorable occasion Philip had booked an american singer called Taka Boom for the pre-christmas special night, and it rturned out she is the younger sister of Chaka Khan. As it happened Chaka Khan had come to the UK to spend some time with her sister and was persuaded to get up and sing a coule of songs. Choosing 'Respect' and 'Little Wing' (because they were songs that she and the backing musians already knew), the performance was stunning - absolutely brilliant, and I have never forgotten it.
Philip moved the night to the Jericho Tavern in 2012 but he died in 2014. Since then it has operated sporadically, and has been superseded at the Bullingdon by the Haven Club, run by Penny Lee.
