Between the 1980's and 90's The Coven and The Apollo Pub held queer club nights. These nights became a hot spot for the queer community of Oxford.
Every Friday night The Coven would host a night called 'Love Shack'. These nights became very popular and The Coven was known as a queer friendly space. Alongside their drinks, the bar would sell LGBTQ+ magazines such as 'Gay News'. The Coven was located on Oxpens Road.
The Apollo Pub which was located on 61 St. Aldates, used to host elaborate drag shows, which sometimes featured trapeze acts! The Oxford Gazette labelled it is 'Oxford's gayest bar'.
