An account of the resource
1. How did you get into contemporary music?
I have always loved lots of different types of music from an early age, listening to alternative radio shows as a teenager and reading magazines like Folk Roots. I had a great music teacher at school and also college and was drawn to find out about all sorts of music from round the world. There wasn't the same access to music that there is now with the internet so I mostly relied on recommendations and radio.
2. What do you do for a living?
I work at Oxford Contemporary Music. We organise concerts, gigs and unusual outdoor events, education projects for children and young people and development support for artists. I have always loved and been passionate about bringing people together to make and experience music in places that are inspiring and memorable - outdoors, in beautiful or evocative locations, in unusual and resonant spaces and this has characterised the work that we've presented in Oxford over the past 15 years. We've done events in the streets, museums, Oxford Botanic Gardens, on farms, in churches and on nature reserves.
3. What gig to you remember most?
There are many! I have a very fond memory of a gig we did at North Aston Organic Farm, in collaboration with Finnish accordion player, Kimmo Pohjonen and the owners and farmers there. He recorded sounds of the farm which played as samples in his music and some of the farmers played equipment live in the concert. The event began with Kimmo arriving on a tractor with a torrential rain storm hammering on the metal roof the cow barn. The music was sensational and dramatic and the crowd were dancing in the barn. The farm residents offered tours of the farm and a food art installation to sample their produce in the grain barn.
4. Who are the most famous musicians you have brought to Oxford?
Sadly not many contemporary musicians get really famous but I was proud to host jazz legend Hugh Masekela in a solo gig at SJE Arts and we once hosted a concert at the Holywell Music Room for artist Tom Phillips where he'd invited Brian Eno and other fantastic contemporary composers to present new pieces based on his paintings.
5. Do you play yourself?
I play the clarinet and baritone saxophone - though just for fun with the street band, the Horns of Plenty.

1. How long have you played music? <br /><br />I've been hitting piano keys for as long as I remember, jamming out to 70s bands with my dad and writing soundtracks and songs. I was lucky that my local state school happened to have an ace music department, so I managed to go on to study music at Oxford Uni. <br /><br />2. What instruments do you play?<br /><br />Piano, synths, accordion, oboe, a bit of guitar and I sing too.<br /><br />3. What do you do for a living? <br /><br />I run <a href="upcycledsounds.co.uk">Upcycled Sounds</a> recording studio, label and venue in East Oxford. So I spend most of my time arranging, producing, writing, playing and promoting music - pretty nice! I'm in a few bands too but my main project at the mo is <a href="limpetspacerace.co.uk">Limpet Space Race</a>, a duo mishmashing pop, jazz, prog and experimental electronics.<br /><br />4. What was your favourite Oxford gig? <br /><br />Too many to name! I'm involved with organising lots of gigs so there are always magic moments when they come together - some highlights would be Paddy Steer, Fofoulah and Hejira shows at Tap Social and all the Tandem Festivals! Also love the Divine Schism shows - their day fest If Not Now When is always banging, and Bossaphonik put on amazing gigs. An extra special gig we played was our Limpet Space Race residency, where we built a big audio-visual installation made of old TVs in the studio. <br /><br />5. What’s the Oxford music scene like? <br /><br />Great people doing exciting things. There's a big DIY culture, I think because Oxford is so expensive to survive in, so there are always creative projects and ideas popping up. Missing the constant barrage of events a lot in lockdown!

Oxford Teenagers in Lockdown
Description
An account of the resource
"I’ve been a professional photographer for over 20 years and live in the centre of Oxford. My work has taken me to all over the country and to many countries abroad. Sadly, in a matter of days, my client order book went from almost full to completely empty as we approached lockdown. <br /><br />I can’t remember a day when I haven’t taken photos, and as old habits die hard, on the first day of the lockdown I started to take a photograph each day to show how the teenagers are responding to their new life. I have set up a new blog post showing these photographs - <a href="https://www.piranhaphotography.com/blog/teenage-life-during-covid-19-lockdown/">Piranha Photography Teenagers in Lockdown Blog Post</a> - to document the life of my teenage children - Clementine and Edmund, as they try to keep busy. <br /><br />Most of the images are taken from around the house, and others while the children are outside exercising locally. I am adding a new picture a day and will continue to do this during the lockdown period. This is very different from my normal work. I am challenging myself to find interesting ways of taking shots indoors at home, and I’m avoiding clichés or boring images. <br /><br />I’m pleased that Leica Fotographie International have used two of my images for their #stayhome project with photographs on this subject submitted from around the world. My friends and family are enjoying this blog and sharing the images on social media."<br /><br />More of Douglas's photos can be seen at <a href="https://www.piranhaphotography.com/">www.piranhaphotography.com </a>
