Description
An account of the resource
Dating to 2008, this speedway race jacket is for the Oxford Cheetahs. On the front of the jacket a Cheetah is represented with the sponsorship branding of TFSuccess. On the reverse the jacket has the number ‘1’ with the sponsor’s branding again.
Ian attended our Sporting Oxford Collecting Day and brought in a Speedway jacket dating to the 2008 season. It was Ian’s company who sponsored the team that season, which was to be the last season the team competed in and featured three fixtures.
The connection between Ian and Speedway began with his father taking him to races when he was young. He remembered visiting the circus in Oxford when he was 9 years old and being introduced to the sport. One of the key aspects Ian remembered was the smell. Getting to meet his hero, Gordon Kennett, the captain of the Oxford Rebels (later renamed the Cheetahs), is a fond memory of Ian’s.
The loss of Speedway and what it meant to its many supporters was clear from Ian’s connections and memories of the sport. The fact that he sponsored the team to have a season when finances for the club were so restricted clearly shows his passion and love of the sport.

Description
An account of the resource
Brought to Oxford in 1994, this item is part of a Sandolo given to Oxford’s City Barge Boat Club.
Richard attended our Sporting Oxford Collecting Day and brought in a Venetian Forcola. This is the typical Venetian rowlock used in gondola style boats – rowed whilst standing up! This Forcola is part of a Sandolo, a particular type of boat, which was donated to Oxford’s City Barge Boat Club in 1994 by the Societie Canottierie Querini, a Venetian boating society.
Richard told us that the City Barge Boat Club began in 1992 sharing its home with Hertford College at the boathouse in Longbridges. Interestingly, the club secured this stunning location as the planning permission insisted that ‘town use’ of the site was included. Set up in the ‘Rose and Crown’ pub on North Parade, Richard showed us the club’s emblem, which includes the rose and the crown.
The strong association of the club to Venice was clearly demonstrated with the donation of the Sandolo. This connection has seen Richard and the club host visitors from Venice and organising trips there to race! This year (2019) City Barge attended the 44th Vogalonga, an international rally they have been involved in since its second year. Richard showed us some amazing photographs and the start of the race in Venice. It looks to be a fantastic spectacle with hundreds of boats.

Description
An account of the resource
Bought in October 2016, the yoga mat is red and orange.
Andy attended our Sporting Oxford Collecting Day and brought in his yoga mat.
Andy has suffered with arthritis since he was 23 years old but by the end 2015 it has left him housebound and in a wheelchair due to painful, swollen limbs. His recovery started in early 2016 when he started following a whole foods, plant based diet called the Paddison programme. By October 2016, he was able to ‘hobble’ and so decided to try Bikrim Yoga (as suggested in the programme).
On 16th October 2016 he drove over to Yoga Venue. Andy describes the experience as ‘emotionally difficult’ – he, an older man who was a ‘cripple’, was attending a class with young, physically active women. Thankfully he received a warm welcome and was made to feel part of the group immediately. He had to be man-handled onto the floor. Since he went to that first class, Andy has attended Bikrim at Yoga Venue 5/6 times per week. It took four months of yoga before Andy was able to pick himself off the floor without assistance. He purchased the mat after his first two sessions.
Andy’s story is inspirational – he’s gone from being confined to a wheelchair on lots of medication to being able to balance and walk about with ease without having to take medication for his arthritis. For him, Bikrim Yoga is ‘the healing yoga’.

My friend Peter and I have been playing New Age Curling, New Age Bowling and Carpet Bowls at our local community centre in Rose Hill for the last 24 weeks. It is very competitive with Peter winning at curling most of the time. Peter is senior to me by 27 years and likely had a misspent youth - a regular 10 pin bowling player. Today I won at Carpet Bowls finally! I enjoy our meet-ups and the sporting activity keeps me generally fitter and in better health.

Description
An account of the resource
This photo and newspaper clippings show Malcolm Lumb running barefoot in Oxford, training for marathons and races.
Malcolm’s photograph was taken in Oxford when he was 38. He had taken up marathon running at the age of 33. He often ran barefoot for marathons and on training runs. Sometimes, Malcolm would take his running shoes off halfway through a race if he was wearing any! Malcolm noticed the difference between road surfaces in England and the USA where he ran in the New York marathon.
When Malcolm worked in the car factory in Cowley, he would use his break at midnight to run through the streets of Oxford. Sometimes, his colleagues would place a bet to see if someone could outpace him running short distances in the factory – but they never did!
These newspaper cuttings feature Malcolm, known for running barefoot or in unusual footwear, including wellington boots! From taking part in marathons across the world, to running with local Oxford clubs, these press cuttings are a snapshot of Malcolm’s running career and highlight some of his adventures along the way. These include:
In Newbury, Malcolm was misdirected by a steward and ended up in someone’s back garden, but he still managed to win.
While he was in the bookies, Malcolm heard a woman screaming as some men had snatched her bag. Malcolm sped after them, and managed to grab the ignition key from thieves’ car.
Malcolm never slept before a marathon due to nerves but stayed up all night listening to music.

White Horse Brewery Cask Filling
Subject

Pubs and Brewing
Description
An account of the resource
These are the casks I helped to fill whilst working for a brief stint at the White Horse Brewery in Stanford-in-the-Vale, Oxfordshire. I helped out for two weeks and carried out the 'racking'. This is where you prepare the casks for filling and also fill them.
As a complete novice, I had no idea at all about any of the process of brewing apart from the key ingredients and that I am a big fan of the end product! I cleaned the casks on a special cask washer, put in the keystones (this is the plastic/rubber 'cork' type object at the top of the cask) attached labels, filled the casks with the (amazing smelling) beer and then whacked in the shive. The shive is the plastic/rubber plug that goes on the longer side of the cask. This will usually have a spile, a peg, knocked into it when in use at the pub!
I filled a fair few casks whilst I was there and learnt a lot from the brewer Alex. He spent the time to tell me about the brewing process, how to measure gravity and also looking at the different hops available. It was great to see the range they brewed at White Horse and I even got to have a little taste of the Sputnik 2! A limited run of their Luna type brand - delicious!

Morrells Display Card
Description
An account of the resource
This item was acquired in around 1975 although it looks earlier. It is 25cm high and is made of plastic-covered card.
You can see three Morrells beers displayed on the card: Malt Stout, Castle Asle and College Ale. They depict the lion rampant for the brewery, called the Lion Brewery, and the College Ale displays some of the dreaming spires associated with Oxford's skyline.

The Oxford Bottle Club
Description
An account of the resource
The Oxford Bottle Club organised its first dig in 1981. This took place at Jackdaw Lane on the Iffley Road. They did, of course, get permission from Christ Church College before starting! The club had some 60-80 members at the time. Simon Somerscales was on the committee and remembers this dig being the first of many.
The clubs first show was held in Oxford's Town Hall in 1978. The club meets two times a month now, on the 1st and 3rd Sundays.
Simon stated collecting in 1977 while working for Thames Conservancy (now the Environment Agency). He was hand digging under a bridge on the Abingdon Road when he discovered a stoneware bottle from North and Co. This was for ginger beer. This first bottle was what got him started collecting and in those days he recounts lots of dredging taking place.
Simon has said that the club is nowhere near as well supported as it used to be partially due to lack of digging sites. He and others still do a lot of research and sometimes put on displays. His favourite bottles are Tap Jars from Oxford.
The club has its own Facebook site - look for Oxfordshire Antique Bottle Club.

A Great Discovery

Perhaps it is usual that a person might adore a city, but is it possible that a city falls in love with a person? It may seem like a weird question, however, it was asked just like this in one of my cosy mind-enlightening book club discussions. At that intellectual gathering, I had frankly confessed to the members that I was not charmed by any particular city rather to be loved by one! Until at length, I decided to benefit from the lengthy, tedious summer vacation and study in Oxford.

Though humble in terms of geographic space, yet this city has played many different vital roles in the history of England. Its wellknown, respected university has embraced numerous innovative and intelligent scholars whom undoubtedly strove to serve and help the world in various fields. The resemblance between me and Oxford is what really makes me fond of it. It is usually quiet and serene because it is not too populous. Furthermore, it has remarkable medieval abbess, marvellous colleges, and huge number of old and modern libraries where a young bibliophile like me can find his true ecstasy. In the heart of the city, the narrow and dark alleys did not seem to have changed for hundred of years. Spread all around Oxford, the green parks are tranquil and excellent places for contemplation and relaxation. Lastly, I have found that the most significant and unique thing about Oxford is the people of it. They are polite, amiable, and clever.

To summarise, I have become to think of Oxford as a treasure that I found. Therefore, I urge anyone who has not found his to proceed in searching for it, and not be disappointed quickly. Unfortunately, I cannot predict my future, but I hope that Oxford occupies a place in it.

Written by Abdulrahman Abdullah Alsidrah
