Yoga Mat

Sporting Oxford
Description
An account of the resource
Bought in October 2016, the yoga mat is red and orange.
Andy attended our Sporting Oxford Collecting Day and brought in his yoga mat.
Andy has suffered with arthritis since he was 23 years old but by the end 2015 it has left him housebound and in a wheelchair due to painful, swollen limbs. His recovery started in early 2016 when he started following a whole foods, plant based diet called the Paddison programme. By October 2016, he was able to ‘hobble’ and so decided to try Bikrim Yoga (as suggested in the programme).
On 16th October 2016 he drove over to Yoga Venue. Andy describes the experience as ‘emotionally difficult’ – he, an older man who was a ‘cripple’, was attending a class with young, physically active women. Thankfully he received a warm welcome and was made to feel part of the group immediately. He had to be man-handled onto the floor. Since he went to that first class, Andy has attended Bikrim at Yoga Venue 5/6 times per week. It took four months of yoga before Andy was able to pick himself off the floor without assistance. He purchased the mat after his first two sessions.
Andy’s story is inspirational – he’s gone from being confined to a wheelchair on lots of medication to being able to balance and walk about with ease without having to take medication for his arthritis. For him, Bikrim Yoga is ‘the healing yoga’.

These objects belong to Mai Thandiwe (Florence). In her own words:

Zimbabwe winnowing basket
Musero yekuZimbabwe

This winnowing basket I was given by my mother in 1995 after she bought it from a basket artisan who lived in Chivi our neighbouring village.

White Horse Brewery Cask Filling
Subject
The topic of the resource
Pubs and Brewing
Description
An account of the resource
These are the casks I helped to fill whilst working for a brief stint at the White Horse Brewery in Stanford-in-the-Vale, Oxfordshire. I helped out for two weeks and carried out the 'racking'. This is where you prepare the casks for filling and also fill them.
As a complete novice, I had no idea at all about any of the process of brewing apart from the key ingredients and that I am a big fan of the end product! I cleaned the casks on a special cask washer, put in the keystones (this is the plastic/rubber 'cork' type object at the top of the cask) attached labels, filled the casks with the (amazing smelling) beer and then whacked in the shive. The shive is the plastic/rubber plug that goes on the longer side of the cask. This will usually have a spile, a peg, knocked into it when in use at the pub!
I filled a fair few casks whilst I was there and learnt a lot from the brewer Alex. He spent the time to tell me about the brewing process, how to measure gravity and also looking at the different hops available. It was great to see the range they brewed at White Horse and I even got to have a little taste of the Sputnik 2! A limited run of their Luna type brand - delicious!

When black Methodists weren't allowed to speak
Description
An account of the resource
Article from Wesley Mem Weekly for 6 October 2020. It recalls an event in Oxford in 1951, of which we Methodists are ashamed. At least the protest meeting was held in our church.

The photo at the top of the page is more cheerful - of the wedding at Wesley Memorial of Kofi and Naa Busia in 1950. Kofi was Prime Minister of Ghana between 1969 and 1972. For more about the connections between Oxford, Wesley Memorial and the Busia family see: https://bit.ly/34pKvZt

Wesley Mem Weekly, as its name suggests, is a weekly journal for members of Wesley Memorial Methodist Church, in New Inn Hall Street Oxford. It started just after the Covid pandemic began, and is distributed on line and in hard copy to members of the congregation. It is not publicly available. Each issue has about six pages. In October there have been several articles for Black History Month by black members of the congregation, and about black history.
