Covid-19: Thanks to essential workers
Essential workers were those that continued to work during the lockdown, providing important services such as healthcare, postal deliveries, food sales and distribution and manufacturing of essential goods. For these people this meant interacting with members of the public, any of whom could be carrying COVID-19. Little was known about how the disease was spread and personal protective equipment (PPE) was in short supply, especially at the start of the lockdown. Members of the public showed their support and thanks to essential workers in a variety of ways.
Each Thursday at 8pm people across the country assembled on their doorsteps to ‘Clap for Carers’. As well as being a way that people could express their thanks to essential workers, it also encouraged community spirit and was a chance for isolated people to see each other.
People also displayed rainbows, often drawn by children, to show support for the NHS and other key workers. Other collaborative projects, such as the Bury Knowle Park Snake, allowed people to use their creativity to express their thanks publicly.
